Seven grandmother-to-be got the surprise of their lives on TODAY on Monday.

With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday, TODAY is saluting some of the most important people in our lives with a week-long "Mom’s the Word" celebration — five days of surprises for mom.

The mothers (and mothers-in-law) thought they were going to watch a Broadway performance on the Plaza, and then they got the surprise of their lives.

The grandmothers-to-be had no idea what was about to happen as they sat on the Plaza, thinking they were about to be treated to a performance by the cast of the Broadway show “Violet.”

Then, their daughters lined up in front of them and flipped cards that said, “I’m pregnant.”

There were hugs, kisses, tears and screams as the women leapt to their feet.

“I’m so excited — I don’t know what to say, I’m flabbergasted,” grandmother-to-be Lynn Anne Walters exclaimed.

"You had no idea?" Matt Lauer asked.

"Absolutely none!" she cried.

SO. MUCH. HUGGING. Pretty much hugs and happy tears and screaming forever.

There were more surprises as one woman told her mom she was having a boy. Matt Lauer hugged another grandma-to-be, Jelene Ahrens, who was weeping with joy upon hearing the news. Her daughter-in-law had been trying to conceive for two years.

Some of the participants said the most difficult part was keeping a lid on the news.

“I’m so glad it’s over. It’s been so hard to keep it a secret,” expectant mom Sabrena Haulter said. “I’ve been with her for the past four days and I had to stop every time before I talked to make sure I didn’t spill something that she could catch on to.”

She did a good job.

"It's wonderful," her mom, Rebecca Reindorf, said of the surprise.

So. Much. Hugging. And clapping, and screaming.

The pregnant ladies received a surprise, too. Each went home with a new baby stroller filled with baby products, plus a $500 gift card. "Everybody gets a stroller, and a grandbaby!" Savannah said. "Congratulations!"
