Batkid stole the nation's heart on Friday when he thwarted foes such as the Riddler and the Joker as throngs of people in San Francisco watched on. And he even got the ultimate accolade: a shout out from President Obama on both Twitter and Vine.

Batkid, of course, is 5-year-old leukemia survivor Miles, who is from northern California and is now in remission. He asked the Make-A-Wish Foundation if he could become Batman. As of Thursday evening, Miles thought he would receive a costume to make the fantasy come to life, according to the organization’s national communications manager Josh deBerge.

But what he didn’t know was that the “City by the Bay” was transformed into present-day Gotham. Miles got to wear a Batkid costume, was aided by an actor dressed as Batman, drove around in a total Batmobile, and even saved a damsel in distress.
