A Texas woman has filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau after the staff of a pizzeria reportedly kicked her out for changing her baby’s diaper on a chair in the middle of the restaurant.
In the report filed Thursday, Miranda Sowers informed the Houston branch of the BBB that she and her three daughters, including a 3-month-old, had visited Brothers Pizza Express in Spring, Texas.
“When I asked about a changing table in the restroom, the girl working there was very rude about it,” reads a portion of Sowers’ customer-service report. “Therefore I laid out my changing pad on a chair and changed her diaper in the restaurant. I blocked anyone from seeing what was going on. When they brought my food, they asked me to leave for changing a diaper.”
Sowers added that while she could “understand their point,” a previous encounter with the worker left her frustrated.
“[Had] she not ignored me when I was requesting another cup when ours had a hole in it or been rude that I nicely complained they had no where [sic] to change a baby, I probably would have taken my kids outside in the heat to change a diaper,” she wrote.
Sowers claimed she called the restaurant after the incident to speak with a manager.
“[He] would not even let me talk so I just had to hang up,” she wrote. “That was our first and last experience with this place.”
A senior director of investigative services for the Better Business Bureau’s Greater Houston and South Texas branch, Leah Napoliello, told TODAY.com that the complaint was sent to the restaurant, but the restaurant isn’t required to respond.
“The business may still respond if it chooses,” Napoliello wrote in an email to TODAY.com.
Napoliello said that, because Sowers filed the complaint under the category of “information only,” she did not appear to be asking for any monetary compensation.
According to Sowers’ report, her desired outcome was for staffers to be “more family friendly and provide a changing table in their bathroom.”
Napoliello added that “information only” complaints are not included on the company’s public BBB report.
TODAY.com made repeated attempts to reach Sowers but was unable to speak with her.
Employee Bessa Lala, whose family owns the restaurant, told local TV station KHOU that she couldn't believe someone would change a diaper at the table.
"How would you feel?" she asked KHOU. "You're sitting there eating. I don't want to lose all these other customers because they see a dirty diaper."
When TODAY.com called the restaurant and asked to speak with a manager for comment, a man, who did not give his name, declined.
“We just want everyone to leave us alone now,” the man said. “It’s just gotten really out of hand.”
