As Hurricane Arthur was slamming the East Coast over the July 4th weekend, police radios in Roanoke Island's Manteo, North Carolina, were blaring with reports of downed power lines, flooded homes, and something else.

Wendy Garcia, who was in labor with a one-week overdue baby, was stranded, unable to get to the hospital to deliver. A main highway overpass was under water, with storm surge rising feet above the overpass' road.

"It looked like waves in there and stuff," Garcia said. "It looked bad."

Because the bridge was so deep underwater, emergency personnel weren't even sure if they could help Garcia.

Luckily, the group found a truck high enough to bring Garcia across the gushing causeway. The only problem was that Garcia, standing at 4 foot 11 inches, wasn't tall enough to reach it, and she had to stand on a first responder's back to reach the truck.

"So I stepped on his back, and on the truck thing, and I stepped inside," Garcia said. "To be honest, it's kinda funny, but I was thinking, 'Did my husband get in the truck too or is it just me by myself in here?'"

But Garcia wasn't alone, and with her family in the back, and Garcia riding up front, the family and first responders were off to the hospital, where news of Garcia's rescue mission had already arrived.

"The doctor comes in and he's like, 'Do you know you're famous?'" Garcia said. "And I'm like, 'why?'"

But it was all worth it in the end when Garcia gave birth to a healthy and happy baby boy.

"The first time they put him on top of me, he looked at me, and I looked at him, and it was the best part ever," Garcia said, laughing.
