A doctor's decision to perform an emergency cesarean section became a twist of fate that allowed a military father in the middle of basic training watch the birth of his son on his iPhone.

Pfc. Chip Hedrick was in basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia, when he got word that his wife, Jolene, had gone into labor at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, West Virginia. When Jolene's doctor decided to perform a C-section delivery, there was just enough time to reach out to Chip's Army sergeant who was able to grant Chip the opportunity to watch his son's birth via his iPhone's FaceTime.

Jolene's mother held up her iPhone as the Hedricks' son, Carter, was born, while Chip watched via FaceTime from Fort Benning.

"It was pretty intense, waiting by the phone and not knowing what was going to happen, but seeing it over the phone helped a lot,'' Chip told NBC West Virginia affiliate WVVA

"It was just astounding,'' Kelly Crow, the head of labor and delivery at Raleigh General, told WVVA. "When you have people in the room that have been doing this for decades say they've got goose bumps, it's just a special experience.
