Megyn Kelly went camping all the time as a kid. But now that she’s an adult? Not so much.

“Sadly, I haven't spent a lot of time outdoors since I moved to New York,” she said. “I feel the disconnect — and I miss it."

So as part of TODAY’s “Summer of Yes” series that encourages people to do something they’ve always wanted to do, Megyn took her husband and their three children on the road for an adventure like no other they’ve experienced.

“I wanted to go camping, because it's all we ever did growing up,” Megyn said. “And as long as I live, those will be some of my fondest memories.”

Hoping to make s'more memories, this time with her own kids, Megyn loaded her family into a 35-foot RV and headed out to New York’s Harriman State Park.

On site, they met with their guide, Dave Dicerbo, owner of Destination Backcountry Adventures and someone used to teaching city dwellers how to appreciate nature.

They hiked trails, picked up worms and looked at bugs. They also learned how to build a shelter from a downed tree.

"There’s something about being in the woods, by the water, under the sun, in the dirt, " Megyn said.

While her husband pitched a tent, Megyn learned to how create the sparks necessary to start a campfire, and everything fell into place.

“My memories of growing up, and the reason that the camping experience means something to me, are of my dad, playing his guitar around the campfire, singing John Denver, and all of us dancing,” she said.

She hopes the family's camping adventure, and maybe future ones, will create similar memories for her own kids.

“How do you raise happy children? You have to make all these deposits. And this is a huge deposit. You know, having fun with mom and dad, with each other, having a sense of adventure," she said.

“I can't play the guitar very well, I can't sing very well, but I don't care. I want to do it for my kids, and I want them to have that baked into their souls.”
