John Legend just nabbed four Grammy nominations, but the acclaimed singer-songwriter has another reason to be excited: He and wife Chrissy Teigen are expecting their first child.

The dad-to-be opened up to TODAY.com about his thoughts on fatherhood Wednesday night at the launch of "Under the Stars," a new holiday song he produced for Stella Artois.

"You just have this little human that’s a product of yours and your partner’s love," Legend said. "And I think that’s really incredible to see ourselves reflected in our little child that we get to raise and teach and nurture, and I’m excited to do that."

"You just want them to be healthy," he added. "As long as they’re healthy, then after that you just take care of the rest. You try to be a good parent."

The couple, who publicly announced their big baby news in October, have already begun discussing what they're going to name the little one.

"We talk about it all the time," Legend said. "Some of ours are more traditional; some of ours are more different. We don't know what we’re going to do yet. We just keep playing around with them, seeing which ones feel the best and which ones we like two weeks later."

And of course, if they do go with an unconventional moniker — such as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's recent choice of "Saint" for their son — it's likely that imitators could follow suit.

"The thing is, while things are nontraditional now, they become popular after a while," Legend said. "There are names that go in and out of style. Kanye and Kim, they're trendsetters, so maybe there’ll be a bunch of kids named Saint after that."

So, what's the key to the smitten couple's success?

“You have to really love and respect the person you’re with and treat them well and not be selfish," the musician advised. "Be considerate. Be a good listener. Communicate. We’re still learning, too. We’re always going to be learning, but so far so good."

Legend also said that they have to get "a little creative" to make time for each other.

"When I’m scheduling things, I try to make our free time coincide so that I’m not working when she’s free and she’s not working while I’m free," Legend explained. "We try our best. Sometimes we don't get to see each other for a few days, but we try to manage it so we’re not apart for more than a few days."

Legend is also hard at work on his next studio album, which is set for release next year.

"It’s going to be a fun, busy year," he said. "I’ll have a little baby, and then my album baby."
