Grandma-to-be goes cray cray.
That’s the best way to describe the hilarious YouTube video which shows a couple who find out they are going to be grandparents in a birthday card. When the husband starts reading the card and says, “Grandpa,” the wife catches on and proceeds to flip out, scaring her poor dog in the process.
For many couples, a fun part of pregnancy is coming up with creative ways to announce it to family and friends. We asked some familiar faces at TODAY how they spilled the beans about their little ones.
Natalie Morales went the snail mail route. “I sent my parents and Joe's parents the first sonogram picture for both of my pregnancies and let them figure it out. My parents were overjoyed as I was the first of their three girls to give them a grandchild," she said.
Meanwhile, Erica Hill went with a more direct approach.
“When we called our parents, we asked them a simple question: “What would you like your grandkids to call you?” said Hill. “It was sweet way to tell them their first grandchild was on the way. Our son, Weston, is the first grandchild on both sides, which was very exciting.”
TODAY Moms readers proved to be quite a resourceful bunch when it comes to clever ways to tell the big news. Readers Pam Carter and Danielle Devillier Meyer may have been the boldest, giving their moms the birthday gift of their positive home pregnancy test sticks. Yes, the actual pee stick. Carter writes on Facebook:
“My family & I were having dinner for my mom's birthday and I gave her my EPT test (cleaned of course - haha) as her gift. When she opened it she said to me (with a puzzled look) "you got me a thermometer?" (Now mind you NO ONE in the family knew.) I'm laughing and I said "you better take another look at that thermometer" and then she saw the POSITIVE + mark and she YELLED, "You're pregnant??"
Meyer’s story is similar. She writes:
“We gave my mother-in-law a wrapped Zales jewelry box with the test in it. She freaked out because she thought it was jewelry then freaked out again! It was great!”
Amanda Manti and Amanda Chismar both spread the news with fun and games. Manti said she spelled “PREGNANT” while playing Scrabble with her mom at a coffee shop. Manti reports that her mom made quite the scene.
Chismar and her husband were playing “Pictionary” with their family. She writes: “My husband just happened to get the word 'stork.' So he drew it, and after it was guessed, we mentioned something about the stork arriving in 8 months.” They captured their family’s surprised reaction on video.
Natiika McCall Martens used their “first child,” their dog, to tell of their new addition. They put a shirt on on the dog that read, “Only Child,” which was crossed out and replaced with “Big Brother.” When the Martens had their second baby, they used the same method, but this time their dog wore a shirt that read, “Oh no, another one?! Baby Martens #2 coming January 2012.”
Sarah Olson Cameron shared the story of someone who made her announcement a game of hide and seek. Writes Cameron:
“I have a friend who announced their pregnancy by purchasing several bottles of Prego spaghetti sauce, tying pink and blue ribbons on them, then placing them in family members’ cabinets...”
At age 40, Kathy Crisp says she never thought she would have children, and then got pregnant. She called her father and asked when he planned to have his other knee replaced. Her dad replied, “I don’t know, why do you ask?”
Crisp writes: “I replied, ‘I found out today you are going to need two good knees!’ It took him a few to get that… he is now the proud Grandpa of 11-year-olds Tommy and Jimmy.”
Amber Wright Randhawa knows something about crazy grandma-to-be reactions. She experienced it with her own mom, who she says had been wishing for a grandchild for a decade.
Randhawa writes on Facebook:
“We found out we were pregnant a week after our Indian wedding (held two years after we were married). We had my dad meet us at my mom’s office and told them we had wedding pics to show them. I handed my mom a manilla folder with the ultrasound pic inside instead. She screamed so loud all her coworkers came running. I don't think she calmed down for an hour.”
