'Americans' star Keri Russell invited a 'badass' to son's 7th birthday party

What does Keri Russell, one of the stars of FX's "The Americans," do to keep her 3- and 7-year-old busy in the middle of a big old blizzard? Pretty much exactly what any of us would.

"It was so good and cozy," she told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie during a Wednesday visit about New York City's recent snowstorm. "We had snow and we went out walking in it, we made chicken soup, we made fires and played games; my 3-year-old acted a kitten the whole day, we had to talk in kitten language and meow to each other. It was fun."

But don't expect a birthday party at Russell's home to be a run-of-the mill affair. For her role, Russell had to learn krav maga, a fighting technique taught to Israeli soldiers. And she thought her trainer Avi (who she called a "badass") would be a great addition to her 7-year-old's bash.

So Russell invited the fighter to the shindig. "Augie did this full mock training for them, where she said, 'Guys, we're all here to see if you have what it takes to be a spy.' ... They were into it. She put masks on them at a certain point, and led them through this whole obstacle course."

"That sounds like the best 7-year-old party ever," enthused Guthrie.

We agree!

"The Americans" returns to FX on Jan. 28 at 10 p.m. ET.
