Christian Slater just loves to spread the love. During his visit to promote his new film "Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1," the actor made sure TODAY's Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb were the recipients of not one, but two enormous bear hugs, which bracketed the trio's innuendo-laced chat about the film.

It all started off innocently enough, when Slater admitted he didn't know the film's rating. "I have seen the film," he insisted. "I saw the extended version of the movie."

It all went downhill from there.

"Don't say extended!" admonished Gifford. "There's a director's cut."

"Right, exactly, we had a mohel come in," joked Slater, referring to the rabbi who attends a Jewish bris ceremony.

Gifford made a snipping motion with her fingers.

"Nymphomaniac" has been making headlines for months due to its frequent sex scenes, so it's not surprising things got a little racy on the set. (By the way, the film is not rated.) In the movie, Slater plays the father of the titular nymphomaniac, though he said he had no sex scenes of his own.

It's kind of a sad story, he said: "As the course of the movie takes place, (sex) becomes something that she starts to use from feeling other things."

He carefully dodged talking about one of his co-stars, Shia LaBeouf (who recently made headlines for some bizarre behavior). "Actors are interesting people. We're a sensitive bunch, and we like to push the envelope and take a lot of chances," he said when asked about LaBeouf.

But for all of the film's controversy, here's one comment that might be the most shocking: Slater is hoping his grandparents will see it. "I'm desperate for them to see it, because they're a fun couple," he said. "They have seven kids. ... I think they're still having a good time."

Time for hugs!

"Nymphomaniac, Vol. 1" is available now on demand and in theaters on March 21.
