Surfer Bethany Hamilton and Paralympic swimmer Mallory Weggemann know a little something about overcoming adversity, and their social media accounts can be a great place to get some perspective.

Hamilton lost her left arm in a shark attack while surfing in 2003 but didn't let that stop her from building a career as a professional surfer. Weggemann became paraplegic in 2008 after a routine epidural injection to treat back pain left her paralyzed from the waist down, and has gone on to become a record-setting, medal winning Paralympian.

The two star in the new EPIX documentary "The Current," which follows athletes with disabilities as they explore newfound freedom of movement in water sports, and TODAY chatted with them about the stories behind some of their most inspiring tweets.

Last summer, Hamilton posted this photo to Instagram and Twitter of a surfing lesson she gave to Nick Vujicic, a man born with no limbs.

Hamilton says Vujicic caught on extremely quickly, and added that he is a huge inspiration to her.

We also chatted with Weggeman about a particularly uplifting update she posted in January, when the swimmer tweeted that she would be going out on a monoski to celebrate the day that marked six years since her paralysis.

Weggemann says she tries to take each year to celebrate her anniversary rather than to grieve on it.
