At the height of summer, we all look forward to weekend getaways. People constantly ask me how to pack well and stay stylish, even on trips, when they can't bring their entire wardrobes with them! Here are some of the summer’s biggest trends that take the hassle out of dressing well on vacation without costing as much as the vacation itself!
Pastel
Pale colors are big this summer, and what better time to wear them than when you have a killer tan? Try a dress in an easily packable material, like cotton or microfiber jersey, in a pretty solid-color pastel. A dress like this, in a flattering, easy-to-wear-on-all-body-types A-line shape, is a go-to. The material resists wrinkling and acts like a blank canvas in a solid: It can be dressed up with bright heels, bold-colored jewelry and a pretty belt for an evening out to dinner and a show. But it is also easy enough to dress down into a great look for daytime sightseeing with a flat or wedge sandal and simple jewelry. Dresses like this work for all ages as well, with a universally flattering hem length to the knee. Pair lightweight short cardigans for cooler evenings or a short, fitted denim jacket for day.

Chambray
Denim is always in, but this summer it’s all about chambray, a lighter-weight and lighter-color denim. Look for a user-friendly button-down shirt that is slightly oversized for that slouchy, casual feeling to get you through all types of travel. We paired this shirt with an equally easy patterned mini in a crinkled fabric, which makes it perfect for packing and getting a trendy look for a day of museums, brunch or a backyard party. The beauty of a shirt like this is its versatility. Try wearing it open with a white tank, patterned scarf and a walking short for a more utilitarian, casual look or a darker denim knee-length skirt if minis aren’t your thing!

‘Gypset’
This is a combination of “jet set” and “gypsy” that looks expensive without costing a fortune. While minis are in, maxi dresses continue to be popular, especially for warm, beachy getaways. This dress is perfect for hot, sultry nights out. Mix and match eclectic jewelry like rhinestones and multicolored beads and a batik-patterned bag to really nail the look. Because of the length, you can still wear a flat sandal in the evening for the perfect combination of comfort and style. Ease up on the heavy jewelry and try adding a head scarf and big sunglasses for day!

Military
The army jacket, the cargo pant, khaki and olive are big this season. I love a lightweight cotton army jacket for cooler casual evenings or days antiquing in the country. Try pairing it with a cropped khaki pant, which is a great and cooler alternative to jeans during the day. Keep the outfit from falling flat or being too literal by adding a patterned sleeveless top in a lightweight cotton or silk for a feminine touch. For day, keep the jewelry simple. Try switching the flat for a metallic high-heel sandal and add a metallic scarf with some chain jewelry to transition any and all of these pieces to a cool evening look.
