Shampooing your hair is a basic routine that most of us have been doing for as long as we can remember. And well, many of us have been doing it incorrectly for as long as we can remember, too.
As part of TODAY’s Doing It Right series, hairstylist Ted Gibson and beauty expert Jenn Falik came by Studio 1A to show how we are often messing up basic beauty routines, like shampooing hair, putting on eyeliner and applying blush. They also revealed how we can get it right.
Shampooing
Most hop in the shower and begin to shampoo their hair, but Ted Gibson says that’s already the wrong approach.
“Do not shampoo directly on your hair,” Gibson told Savannah. “Only shampoo your scalp.”
Shampoo acts as a detergent and actually dries out your hair, and most of the grease and grime is sitting on the scalp anyways. Gibson suggests applying a quarter inch of shampoo into your hands, then adding it to the scalp by starting at the temples, working to the top of the head, then down to the nape of the neck.
“Always concentrate on shampooing the scalp,” he emphasized, “not the hair.”
Eyeliner
Applying eyeliner can be a tricky task, so it may not come as a surprise that most are applying it incorrectly. Instead of putting eyeliner on in one single line, beauty guru Jenn Falik suggests an alternative. “Do it in two lines,” she said.
Start applying eyeliner on the inner corner of the eye and go half way across the lid. Then go to the outer corner and apply a line inward, meeting the first line you drew.
Also be sure to put eyeliner on the root of your lashes. “Your lashes should move as you’re applying,” Falik said.
Blush
Apply blush incorrectly and you might end up looking like a clown. Fortunately, Falik has one easy way to make sure you get it right.
“Find the apple of your cheek,” she said. “Dap blush on the apple, then work your way up a little bit.”
