Prince Harry ended a two-day visit to Italy, during which he paid tribute to fallen World War II troops, by catching tourists off guard with his surprise visit to the Roman Colosseum.

Dressed casually in jeans and a checked shirt, Harry, 29, walked around the amphitheater with a tour guide while visitors waved and called out his name.

Alyshia Quenneville, a college student from Toronto, told the Associated Press that seeing the prince was “better than the Colosseum.”

The prince’s visit Monday to the Roman ruins follows two days of solemn tributes paid to Allied troops during commemoration events marking the 70th anniversary of the battle of Monte Cassino.

Harry, an officer in the British military, wore full military dress during the ceremonies. He laid a wreath of poppies to honor fallen comrades from the World War II battle. He also shook hands with numerous veterans who gathered at the events.
