In a new documentary about the Queen, Prince Charles not only opens up about his mother, but offers effusive praise for his “down to earth” wife, Camilla, as well.

Charles speaks candidly and fondly about the Duchess of Cornwall in the documentary “Our Queen,” in which he describes how well Camilla handled their first trip together to Papua, New Guinea last year.

“She loved it, and I hope they found out just how special she is,” he said. “And I think they very much responded to her just being jolly good and down to earth.”

The prince’s openness signifies how far the couple has come in the public relations battle involving his wife, who is still seen by many as the person who broke up his first marriage to Princess Diana.

Charles dated Camilla long before he married Diana in 1981, but he resumed his relationship with her once that union started crumbling.

“There were three of us in this marriage,” Diana famously said in an interview about that time. The couple eventually divorced in 1996.

The infidelity, among other things, hurt Camilla’s image for many years. It led the prince to keep their romance out of the public’s eye as much as possible. Charles eventually married Camilla in 2005.

“Our Queen,” which was broadcast over the weekend on Britain’s ITV1, provides viewers with a rare look into the royal family and their lives during the monarch's Diamond Jubilee year.
