Normally the Canadian national anthem is not sung when two NHL teams from the U.S. are playing each other, but an exception was made during the Penguins' game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. Fans at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh joined in the anthem with singer Jeff Jimerson during pregame, while a pair of maple leaves were projected onto the ice.

The Ottawa Senators' home game scheduled for Wednesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs was postponed following the shooting rampage. The gunman, identified to NBC News as Michael Joseph Hall, a convert to Islam using the name Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, killed a soldier guarding the National War Memorial, then opened fire in Parliament.

"The National Hockey League wishes to express its sympathy to all affected by the tragic events that took place this morning in downtown Ottawa," the league said in a statement.
