On the night women’s halfpipe skiing made its Olympic debut, the woman who helped pioneer the sport received a heartfelt tribute for her fight to bring the event to the Winter Games.

Crew members formed the shape of a massive heart as they skied down the middle of the halfpipe in honor of Sarah Burke, who died in a training accident in 2012.

Burke's mom was in Sochi, Russia, as American Maddie Bowman earned the sport's first Olympic gold medal.

“We’re here to make our parents proud, our countries proud, our friends proud, and especially Sarah proud because she's here with us,” Bowman said.
