This is not a drill: Firefighter stages elaborate, adorable proposal

March 25, 2014 at 12:14 PM ET

Sometimes it's OK to trick your girlfriend — specifically when it comes to popping the question.

That's what Ohio firefighter Justin Deierling did last Wednesday when he surprised his girlfriend Megan Zahorec with a marriage proposal in front of the staff and students at Greentown Intermediate school, in North Canton, Ohio, where she is a counselor.

Zahorec, 27, thought the building had emptied for a fire drill. But soon, she saw a sign mounted on the side of the fire truck.

A fellow firefighter unveiled Deierling's proposal sign.

Then, Justin, 31, got down on one knee. Her response: "Yes."

Adam Deierling, Justin's brother, who filmed the proposal, told TODAY.com that Justin had been planning the big moment for two weeks. "He didn't let anyone in on it except a few guys at the firehouse, a couple people at the school, and then me, of course," he said in an email.

Justin, who proposed on their six-month anniversary, first met Zahorec as a volunteer firefighter, when he passed out water to students at a school walk-a-thon.
