Melanie Griffith filed for divorce on Friday from Antonio Banderas, her husband of 18 years, new court documents reveal. The actress cited irreconcilable differences.
"We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner, honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together," the pair said in a statement they shared with TODAY.
The celebrity couple married on April 14, 1996, and have one child together. Griffith is seeking sole custody of daughter Stella, who will be 18 years old in September. The actress is also seeking spousal support from Banderas.
Griffith, 56, has been married four times. She was married to Steven Bauer in 1982 and divorced in 1987. They have a son, Alexander. She was twice married to Don Johnson and has a daughter, Dakota, with the actor.
Griffith was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for her role in the 1988 film "Working Girl."
Banderas, 53, left his first wife, Ana Leza, in 1995 when he met Griffith while making the film "Two Much."
The actor is the voice of the popular animated "Puss in Boots" character and made a name for himself in films such as "Philadelphia," "Interview With a Vampire" and "The Mask of Zoro."
