Golfer Rory McIlroy's announcement on Wednesday that he'd ended his engagement to Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki came as a surprise to many — particularly because the wedding announcements were just mailed out over the weekend.

“The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” McIlory, 25, said in a statement. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”

Social media blew up after the announcement, particularly because of the abrupt way the North Irishman ended the relationship.

Hours after releasing the statement, the two-time major winner spoke with reporters about the break up at the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth, England.

“Look, I’m not different than anyone,” he said. “Everyone has been through breakups and it’s obviously very, very difficult.” The couple had been dating since 2011 and were engaged in Australia on New Year's Eve.
