It's been a big year for Duchess Kate, but she rang in her 32nd birthday in her trademark, understated style, by celebrating out of the spotlight.

Kensington Palace declined to reveal any details about the Duchess of Cambridge's birthday plans, other than acknowledging that she planned to spend the day privately.

In years past, Kate's husband, Prince William, has swept her away to romantic retreats in Scotland for her birthday. But last year, the duchess, newly pregnant and recovering from severe morning sickness, stuck close to home and was treated by her husband to a night out with her parents and siblings to a Cirque du Soleil show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

This year, her husband's recent enrollment at Cambridge may be another reason why she chose a quiet evening, which she'll likely spend with family before he gets home. And now that she's marked her birthday, the duchess is officially the older woman in the relationship — her younger hubby doesn’t turn 32 until June.

While we wait to see how the 32-year-old Duchess Kate will knock our socks off, take a look back at some of our favorite moments from her jam-packed 31st year:
