The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has applied to the Intellectual Property Office to trademark the names of Duchess Kate along with her husband, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, a representative for St. James Palace confirmed to TODAY.com.
The charitable foundation, which focuses on in military personnel, young people and ecological conservation, applied for the trademark to produce clothing, footwear and headgear in the charity’s name.
“The foundation is protecting their image rights for any future use,’’ a royal spokesperson said. “There have been reports out there that have been way off the mark. The duchess isn’t bringing out her own clothing line or anything like that. This is just to protect their rights like any other charity would do.’’
The trademark will allow the charity to produce clothing or other items bearing the names of the three royals, although the spokesperson said there are no immediate plans to do so. Since Duchess Kate joined the royal family, donations to the foundation have increased from $950,000 in 2010 to $7.2 million in 2011.
