DIY expert Kristen Turner of Glitter ‘N Glue gives you a step-by-step guide to adding gold flourishes to your home décor. With just spray paint or a Sharpie, you can transform everyday objects — like a vase and clay pot — into something unique.
A clay pot painted gold is a bold accessory to add to any home or kitchen decor. While these accent pieces can sell for hundreds at luxury interior design stores, making one at home is an easy DIY project that will only cost you around $20. The gold-accented pot and vase below also make perfect wedding or housewarming gifts.
Materials:
- A clay pot
- Liquid gold paint
- Matte black spray paint
- Paint brush
You can purchase liquid gold paint at your local craft and hobby store.
Outside or in a well-ventilated area, spray the base color on your clay pot. Evenly apply two to three coats of paint.
Matte black is the base color for this pot, but the color is completely up to you. You can choose white, brown or whatever color matches your home color scheme.
Use a brush to apply the liquid gold paint to the inside of your bowl.
Completely cover the inside of your bowl with gold paint.
Paint the outside rim of your bowl.
An uneven line of paint and the appearance of brush strokes give your bowl that aged and rustic look.
Gold leaf leopard vase:
The cabinet under my sink is full of vases I've collected from over the years. Adding gold detail is a great way to dress up and transform a boring old vase into something fresh and fun.
Materials:
- A vase
- Gold leafing paint pen
Krylon makes a really great gold leafing paint pen. They can be purchased at your local craft or art supply store in packs of two for around $5. They're also available in silver and bronze.
First, be sure that your vase is clean and free of residue. Then use your paint pen to directly apply your pattern. I chose a leopard design, but you can add polka dots or stripes or stars to your vase. The design is completely up to you, so be creative!
Don't worry if you're not an artist, a leopard-like pattern is really easy to recreate. First, draw a collection of “C” and “I” shapes.
Go over your shapes with a zig-zag stroke to create the furry texture.
Allow at least a half hour to dry before you use your vase.
Fill your vase with an arrangement of your favorite flowers.
DIY tip: Roll up a large leaf and place it inside your vase before you fill it with water. This will really make your gold pattern pop against the green leaf!
