A "handful" of people who may have been in contact with the first patient to be diagnosed with Ebola in the US are being monitored by the Centers for Disease Control, director Dr. Tom Frieden said Wednesday.

"We will stop Ebola in its tracks in the U.S.,' Frieden told Matt Lauer on TODAY.

More from Dr. Frieden:

  • On how the CDC will identify those who may need to be monitored following contact with the US patient: "That's why we have a seven-person team in Dallas today, helping to review that with the family and make sure that we identify everyone that could have had contact with him."

  • On broader testing in the US: "We've already identified about 100 people [in the US] who have that level of concern. We've tested 14 of them, and this was the first individual to test positive."
  • On preventing Ebola outbreaks in Africa: "This one could have been stopped if we had gotten in there earlier."
