Dave Chappelle's "Chappelle's Show" was at the height of its popularity when the comedian walked away in 2004, after just two seasons. Ten years later, he's finally making jokes about his troubled exit.

"Listen, here it is: Technically, I never quit," he told David Letterman during a visit to the "Late Show" on Tuesday. "I'm seven years late for work."

As for why he turned his back on a $50 million deal with Comedy Central for a third and fourth season of the show, Chappelle explained to Oprah Winfrey in 2006 that he was stressed out and didn't like the environment.

"I would go work on the show, and I felt awful every day," he told the talk-show titan. "I felt like some kind of prostitute or something. If I feel so bad, why keep on showing up to this place?"

Chappelle has since returned to stand-up comedy and has nine upcoming dates at Radio City Music Hall in New York this month.

"The Late Show With David Letterman" airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
