Cold weather crime wave: Thieves target cars warming up in driveways

With cold gripping much of the country, many motorists are rushing outside in the morning, turning on their cars, and then going back in their homes while their vehicles warm up. Now thieves are taking advantage of the cold weather by looking for puffs of warm exhaust pouring from car tailpipes, then snatching the idling cars. TODAY national investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen rode with the Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement auto theft task force to report on the cold weather crime wave.

To protect yourself, police suggest you never leave your car running unattended. But if you do warm your car up in advance, keep an extra set of keys and lock the idling car.
