Campbell Brown is the co-anchor of NBC’s “Today,” Weekend Edition, the nation’s top-rated weekend news program. She also serves as a primary correspondent for “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” and the weekday “Today” show. Brown has covered major news events for the network, including the last two presidential elections, reporting from Baghdad during the first Iraqi elections and reporting from Iraq months earlier when the first American soldiers were court-martialed for abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad. Brown also covered the death of Pope John Paul II from Rome, and she has reported from Gaza and the West Bank on the violence in the Middle East. Most recently, she has covered Hurricane Katrina and its devastating aftermath reporting extensively from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
Prior to joining “Weekend Today,” Brown served as NBC News White House correspondent since February 2001, where she reported for “Nightly News with Tom Brokaw,” “Today,” and MSNBC. She was at the White House on September 11 reporting on the President’s first comments after the attack and through the launch of combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Before that, she was part of the NBC News team that covered the presidential campaign of republican candidate George W. Bush. Brown reported throughout the Decision 2000 election cycle, and covered the Republican primaries, the Republican National Convention, the Presidential Debates and Election Day. She stayed with the President and his team reporting from Austin, Texas on the post election day Florida recount story.
Prior to covering the Bush campaign, Brown had been a Washington, D.C. based NBC News correspondent. Joining the network in 1998, Brown was first assigned to cover President Clinton’s impeachment trial. After that, she was assigned to the Pentagon, reporting on the war in Kosovo. During her time in the Washington bureau, Brown also traveled extensively with President Clinton.
From 1996 to 1998, she was a correspondent for the NBC News Channel, where she covered national breaking news stories such as the crash of Swiss Air Flight #111 and the Pope’s historic visit to Cuba for NBC affiliates, MSNBC and CNBC.
Brown started her career in local news as the political reporter covering Kansas politics for KSNT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Topeka, Kan. She then moved to WWBT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Richmond, VA. Brown also reported for WBAL-TV in Baltimore, Md. and WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. before joining the network.
Brown grew up in Louisiana, and graduated from Regis College in Denver, Colo. with a B.A. in Political Science. After graduation, she spent a year teaching English in the former Czechoslovakia. Brown currently resides in New York.
