Some of the funniest people in entertainment, the president of the United States and fans of late-night television were among those who shared their fond memories of "Late Show" host David Letterman after he announced Thursday that he would be retiring in 2015.
As the longest-running late-night host in TV history, Letterman has chatted with countless guests and entertained the masses with a variety of memorable antics. His impact on television, comedy, and the people who dropped by or tuned in was not lost on those who tweeted after his surprising news came out.
During the taping of his show on Thursday, Letterman offered his own thanks. "I just want to reiterate my thanks for the support from the network, all of the people who have worked here, all of the people in the theater, all the people on the staff, everybody at home, thank you very much."
Letterman, true to form, found the comedy in delivering his news. He told his audience that now he and longtime bandleader Paul Shaffer "can be married." Actor Rainn Wilson weighed in on another family secret.
