Kyle MacLachlan may be playing a man trying to corral a 10-year-old girl's supernatural abilities by any means necessary in the new NBC series "Believe," but trust him, he's "just misunderstood."

That's what the actor, who often plays straight arrows in series like "Twin Peaks" and "Sex and the City," told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Tuesday about his apparently evil new character.

"I haven't been able to play someone in a darker vein for a while," he said. "The guy is actually coming from a place of good. He wants to try and do something positive for the world, but the way he goes about it is getting him in trouble."

One of the big thrills about the show, he said, was working with Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón, who co-created the show with Mark Friedman, directed the series' pilot and is an executive producer. "Alfonso really gave the look of the show a cinematic feel, you know, and he's very specific about his style of shooting," said the actor. "He brought his big screen sensibilities to the small screen."

But it wasn't all fun and games shooting "Believe" on the polar vortex-stricken streets of New York City this winter, he said. "On the third take (of a scene), I said, 'You might have to loop this, you might have to do dialogue replacement, because I can't move my mouth any more, I'm so cold!'" he chuckled.

"Believe" airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on NBC.
