Surf's up! 'Fault' stars Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley nab Teen Choice Awards

The teens have had their say! Each summer the 13- to 19-year-old crowd votes for their favorites in movies, music, TV and more for the annual Teen Choice Awards. This year that meant they decided if Taylor Swift is the top female country crooner (she is) or if the Kardashians are still worth keeping up with (they are), as well as which stars stole the big and small screens.

For the famous faces, winning meant adolescent adulation and, of course, swimming away with one of the coveted Teen Choice surfboards.

On Sunday night, Tyler Posey ("Teen Wolf") joined Sarah Hyland ("Modern Family") to host the big event at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. As the winners were revealed on the show, we took a look at the moments that turned out to be the real winners of the night.

Performance high point
Demi Lovato set the tone for the night when she opened the show with her hit "Really Don't Care." The former "X Factor" judge hit the stage decked out in black leather and joined by British singer Cher Lloyd. The pop stars had the in-house audience cheering and fans online tweeting.

Sincerely thankful
Teens picked Ansel Elgort as the top man in a movie drama for his performance in "The Fault in Our Stars" (the film was a Choice winner, too) and the star thanked the teens and those out there living with cancer, who inspired the story. "We didn't want to make it a story about sickness or cancer, because it wasn't. This move really was about love," he insisted.

Best use of a trophy
Sure, surfboards are cool, but what's even cooler? Using them. When Elgort's "Fault" co-star Shailene Woodley nabbed an award for her role in "Divergent," she said, "Hopefully I'll be brave enough to take this into the water during Shark Week." You can't do that with an Oscar!

Biggest laugh of the night
While celebrity presenters kept the good times rolling on stage, a pre-recorded spot from Andy Samberg (alongside his pal Mindy Kaling) got the biggest laughs of the night. In it, he decided to give teen girls some advice for dealing with menstrual cramps.

Kaling offered to field the topic, but Samberg insisted, "Actually I think I got it. I’m no expert, but I guess I’d say grab a hot water bottle, couple of ibuprofs and the first season of ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ and snuggle up under a chenille blanket with a big, fat bowl of ice cream and try to forget about the stress in the outside world. There’s enough going on inside your body!”

Somebody give that man a surfboard!

Trick or treat?
"Hunger Games: Catching Fire" villain Donald Sutherland won for being the best of the bad guys out there. When he got to the stage, the actor assured his fans he's really "sweet tempered and generous." So generous, he even brought them a little something from Panem.

"They're berries," he said as he threw them out to the crowd before adding, "I wouldn't eat them if I were you."

The 'ultimate' surfboard
Actress, singer and former Disney Channel star Selena Gomez walked off with the top Teen Choice honor for 2014. Like winners Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in years past, Gomez (who's also a three-time Choice "hottie" winner) nabbed the "ultimate" Choice award for her overall efforts in the world of entertainment.

In addition to thanking her mom, Gomez told the teens out there that they make her a better person and "remind me of what's important, and that's giving, loving and caring about each other."
