Baby clones, poetry readings, dance critiques and vocabulary lessons … the coaches had plenty to say about Monday's top eight performance episode of "The Voice."
James Wolpert got the night started with "Somebody to Love," taking the stage with a host of background singers that looked and dressed a lot like the bespectacled, tuxedo-clad Queen fan. The message seemed clear — vote for James, or an army of lookalike robots will come to your door, grab your phone and do the texting for you.
"Representing Team Adam — James Wolpert … and the many James Wolperts," host Carson Daly said.
It was an image hard for the coaches to miss. "For a minute, I couldn't get out of my head that it was an army of … like if Adam and James cloned themselves and made babies," Christina Aguilera said. Adam avowed that this was, in fact, their intent.
"Oh, I'm loving this," Blake Shelton said. And why wouldn't he be? An army of Adam-James clones would have to mean that Adam-Blake clones would be just around the corner.
CeeLo Green, meanwhile, saved his passion for the singer he cares the most for — Caroline Pennell, his last remaining contender. Leaving nothing to chance after her rendition of Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over," her coach broke out the poetry.
"I wrote something for you," CeeLo told her. "It says, 'Here we are, with nothing but each other against all of the odds, and there you are. There you are, and the only reason that you're alone is that everyone and everything disappears. You are the only thing that matters to me at this moment. So if you win nothing else, you win, because you win my heart.'"
Now, he can only hope that she also wins votes, considering she's still around only because viewer tweets saved her last week.
"All right Adam, top that," Carson challenged.
"I wrote something too," Adam said. "No, I did not. I don't know how to write."
Apparently, writing wasn't part of People's criteria for deciding the Sexiest Man Alive.
Blake did not get that honor, but he did get some props on his dance moves from guest performer Robin Thicke, following a question relayed via Twitter on his improved rhythm.
"I don't know who he's working with, but I'm loving it," Thicke said. "Chris Brown should be very scared right now."
Blake also got some attention for his newfound vocabulary, which he showed off while praising Ray Boudreaux.
"Ray has got some style. He's got some swag up there," Blake said.
Christina laughed.
"Wow, you learned what the word 'swag' is," she said.
"Isn't that merchandise? You buy it at a concert?" Blake said.
Later, CeeLo praised Ray by saying, "It was a great song choice from Blake. I was surprised."
"I've got some swag too!" Blake said.
Who knows what his word-of-the-day calendar will offer up on Tuesday?
CeeLo also had some memorable words to say about Jacquie Lee, who sounded a lot older than her 16 years in singing "Who's Lovin' You?"
"It's crazy. It's like you swallowed an old lady," he said.
And with that, the show ended. Because really, where could anyone go from there?
