Pope Francis is on Instagram!

The pontiff, 79, joined the social media platform Saturday under the username @franciscus, and shared a photo of himself praying while kneeling. The caption: "pray for me" (which the pope shared in nine different languages).

On Twitter, the pope said that he is: "beginning a new journey, on Instagram, to walk with you along the path of mercy and the tenderness of God."

Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom was on site and also documented the moment.

"Watching Pope Francis post his first photo to Instagram today was an incredible moment," he captioned a photo of himself.

Instagram reported Saturday that in less than 12 hours, Pope Francis amassed more than 1 million followers, which set records on Instagram for the most followers in a single day and also the fastest-growing account ever on the platform.

The pope's move comes three years after he joined Twitter, where he now has 25 million followers in nine different languages. The pope's Twitter handle, @pontifex, was launched by Pope Benedict in 2012. Pope Francis took the handle over when he took office in 2013.
