Most Americans now avoid drinking soda pop

July 29, 2014 at 5:39 PM ET

The bubble has burst for soft drinks. A new Gallup poll reports that 63 percent of Americans say they're actively avoiding drinking soda, compared to 41 percent in 2002. But with American soda consumption vastly outpacing other countries, even while "actively avoiding" there's still quite a ways to go. As recently as 2012, another Gallup poll had nearly half of Americans drinking at least one soda per day. Soda has no known health benefits. However, the same amount of Americans who drink no soda and those who have two or more per day reported themselves as "very" or "somewhat" overweight: about four in 10.
