On a day that shattered records — and perhaps the confidence of electro-pop duo LMFAO — Guinness World Records announced that the video for "Gangnam Style," by Korean rapper PSY is the most liked video in YouTube history.
Gaining 2,141,758 user "likes" since its July 15 YouTube debut, "Gangnam Style" topples previous record holder, "Party Rock" by LMFAO, which released a statement on Friday saying the two were taking time off. (No mention on whether the hiatus is connected to the record loss — probably not, but there you go.)
Meanwhile, everything keeps coming up PSY, with Friday's announcement for Guinness adding to the K-Pop star's growing list wins, including "Gangnam Style's" status as the first K-Pop song to hit No. 1 on iTunes.
"Having been the 'Have you seen this?!' video of the last two months across the Web, it's great to be able to award a record for this tremendously popular video," Dan Barrett, Guinness World Records community manager, said in a statement. "In years past, it was unthinkable that something would be viewed a hundred million times, and now 'Gangnam Style' has achieved more than twice this figure in just 3 months on YouTube."
Along with its more than 2.1 million "likes," "Gangnam Style," also has an obligatory 100K dislikes, and more than 227 million views ... and that's not including all the viral tributes.
By comparison, along with LMFAO's 1,574,963 likes for "Party Rock Anthem," previous record holders include Justin's Bieber's "Baby" (1,327,147 likes) and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" (1,245,641 likes).
