Fresh out of the river: This Domino's delivers pizzas by canoe

Call it pizza — by any means necessary.

When people living in one part of England exclaim "Pizza guy's here!" they may very well be looking to the river instead of the street.

Because living in the sticks shouldn't deny people their thin-crust pepperoni and breadsticks, one Domino's restaurant is now delivering to customers living along the River Loose in Maidstone, Kent, by using a canoe.

The pizza "buoys," as the company calls them, wear full wet suits under their uniforms. The canoes come bearing pizza in floatable boxes that are also attached to a life buoy to prevent any soggy pizza mishaps.

"We’re really excited to be the first store in the U.K. tasked with providing a river service,'' Loose store manager, IIona Paozalyte, said in a statement. "Being in an area that is famed for its scenic waterways means the rivers are a big part of the local community, so we’re glad we can extend our standard delivery methods to harness the local scenery and ensure we can deliver by land or water to pizza lovers in the area."

The canoe deliveries are currently on a trial basis and only apply to phone orders from locations with an address among the 2,400 residents in the rural area of the river, which is 5 miles long. They also will deliver to any boats anchored in the river.

Domino's plans to donate to and hold a monthlong fundraiser for the Loose Conservation Trust to help preserve the area's waterways.

The delivery paddlers are being trained by local canoe service Kent's Canoes, a Domino's spokesperson told TODAY. The Maidstone location, which has only been open for a month, delivers rain or shine during store hours to people like Debbie Hayes, a local woman who was the first customer to get a river delivery.

"It’s great living by the river, but it has always been impossible to get food delivered to our house so we owe Domino’s a big thank you for allowing us to have a night in,'' she said in a statement.
