When the world first met baby Sky, so did her adoptive parents, in one of the most memorable moments on TODAY.

It’s been several months since Priscilla Devries and Richard Dros were introduced to their 1-month old daughter on live television in Studio 1A, both crying as they held the little girl they had prayed for to join their family. The emotional meeting was part of TODAY's Choosing Adoption series.

The Dutch couple wanted to have biological kids “but it was medically not meant to be,” they said. So they turned to adoption and ended up in the U.S., where a woman who gave birth to a girl last fall chose the couple to be the baby’s parents.

Now back home in the Netherlands, the family is doting on Sky.

“She's doing very well, she's very sweet. She only cries when she is hungry,” Devries said.

“Our family is complete now: we have a boy, we have a girl,” added Dros.

The boy, 3-year-old Des, was also adopted as an infant from the United States.

“We talked a lot about his sister. It was strange because he would say, ‘We're going to fly to the United States and I'm getting a sister there,’” Devries said. Des was still comfortable with the idea when he first met Sky in New York.

“He says, ‘There's my sister, there's my sister,’ and he kisses her.”

That was back in November and more celebrations were ahead. When the family returned to the Netherlands and landed in Amsterdam, a contingent of well-wishers was waiting to welcome them and their newest addition.

“It was terrific to be back home, everything was with balloons and flowers and cards,” Devries said.

The mission now is to provide a happy home for the kids. It’s rare for non-American couples to adopt American children, with only 100 such adoptions taking place each year. But Devries and Dros, who are both police officers in the Netherlands, said Sky’s birth mother specifically chose them, believing they could offer a safe home for the baby.

Devries and Dros are determined to stay in touch with her as Sky grows.
