'Splurge or Save?' summons the competitive beast within Hoda

Hoda rarely misses an opportunity to showcase her competitive nature…Even when it comes to being right about what kind of tuna to buy.

TODAY diet and nutrition editor Madelyn Fernstom quizzed the ladies on their grocery savvy, challenging them to decide which items deserve a "splurge" (milk, olive oil, grass-fed beef) and which ones are okay to scrimp on (tuna, fruit with peels).

Hoda and Kathie Lee ended the game in a tie, but not for lack of trying on Hoda's part: She rang in to "give" the answer several times after it had already been revealed and repeatedly hushed her competitor. When the ladies were forced to split their spoils, Hoda accepted a bottle of olive oil with a "Thanks a LOT, Madelyn."

That's our sportswoman.

Julieanne Smolinski is a TODAY.com contributor. She's planning to rope Hoda in to her baseball hustling scheme.
