On a media tour to promote his documentary "Monumental," now out on DVD, Kirk Cameron was asked about the controversy surrounding Rep. Todd Akin's recent remarks.

"I'm not his political strategist, thank God," Cameron, who interviewed Akin for the film, told TODAY Tuesday. "Clearly, this is a man who is advocating the sanctity of life through and through. He said he misspoke and he apologized for it. I like to evaluate people based on their entire life, their entire career, and (what) they stand for."

Cameron spent time with Akin during filming of "Monumental," which examines the history of religion in American government.

Akin has been urged to resign and abandon his Senate bid following a television interview in which he suggested that the female body is able to prevent pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."

"He loves his wife, he's got six children," Cameron said of the candidate. "I believe he's a good man. He's now in a very, very difficult spot."
