As a loyal fan of the Fourth Hour, you've probably noticed a handsome, mustachioed gentleman who shows up on occasion to pass out cocktails, smooch the ladies, or be a visual aid for the chat. It's Jerry: Studio 1A head of props, great guy, and excellent sport.
With the ladies on Olympic hiatus, we caught up with Jerry in his amazing cave of wonders, a prop room with enough wine glasses to hold "Boozeday Tuesday" for the entire state of Rhode Island. He's responsible for getting together whatever glass the "foodies" (those are the food stylists) need for the day's adult beverage. But that's only a teensy tiny sliver of his job.
"You never know what they're going to need, so I try to just save everything," he says, and indeed, it looks a little like an episode of "Hoarders" in there. (Take, for example, a random rubber chicken.)
Jerry's favorite part of the Fourth Hour, he says, is the chat, because it gets so crazy and occasionally wine gets excitingly spilled. But he also enjoys the game show segments. "Everybody gets reallllllly competitive," he says (looking at you, Hoda).
Although he's worked on other shows like "SNL," Jerry's been coming to work at 30 Rock for over 30 years. For TODAY, he gets to work around 1 a.m. The Fourth Hour is, blissfully, the last part of his day, but he says it's worth it, because it's just that much fun. And yes, he says, Kathie Lee and Hoda are as nice in real life as they are on TV.
When asked if he likes to be on camera, he laughs. "Sometimes," and says. "Not when they want to put me in Spanx."
Some quick Jerry fun facts:
- His favorite food is ice cream.
- He went to college to be an accountant.
- He was born and raised in the Bronx but roots for the Cleveland Indians.
- He makes his own wine. "We're still deciding on a name," he said. "But my daughter likes 'Jerry's Juice.'"
