Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day! Ay, matey, we know, but it be a real holiday. Sort of.
A couple of grog-swilling scalawag enthusiasts came up with the idea of a day dedicated to speaking like Long John Silver, and made a web site to promote it. The campaign came to the attention of humorist Dave Barry, who mentioned it in a column. And the rest, as they say, is yo-ho-hostory.
Now it's the 10th anniversary of the event, and there was much celebrating with goofy Captain Hook impressions (and let's be real: probably a lot of Captain Morgan). The Broadway show "Peter and the Starcatcher" offered free tickets to buccaneers who show up to the box office in costume, which was just one of thousands of pirate-centric events planned around the country. (You can check out a map of them on TLAPD site.)
It's also a big day for the Internet, which loves a good pirate joke. The Talk Like a Pirate Facebook page is tipping the scale at around 76k, and on Twitter, everybody from NPR to Aaron Carter to Arby's got in on the game.
Need to brush up on your pirate lingo? Just check out a handy glossary here. Don't forget to celebrate, but also, to have some vitamin C. It's no day to get scurvy.
How are you going to celebrate? Tell us in the comments below.
