Sexy or sweet?

With February 14 just around the corner, that’s the decision to make when it comes to deciding on those now-traditional Valentine’s treats: lingerie, underwear and bedroom attire.

From boxers for her and stripes for him to classic red and pink or trendy lilac and polka dots, we have all the latest “intimate apparel” trends right here. (Plus we’ll tell you how your Valentine’s Day purchase can benefit the American Heart Association.)

Read on for the latest looks in this week’s edition of our fashion-and-beauty update.

Man-styled underwear for women is all the rage.

Million dollar baby
One of the hottest underwear trends for women is the “boxer” — knit or woven — and man-styled undershorts of all kinds. They are oh-so-sexy when worn by a woman, but don’t borrow your guy’s duds! Have him pick up some of the latest boxer styles specifically styled to fit you, but with lots of men’s detailing, including the occasion button-fly front. You’ll find them at Vivre.com, in the Victoria’s Secret PINK collection and at Old Navy.

Trend Tip:
For him, you can’t go wrong with an introduction to the wonders of silk boxers, which you can find from Nordstrom and Fredericks.com in solids and in festive Valentine’s Day prints.

Send hearts a-flutter — AND support a heart-health charity!

Go red
Here’s how you can support the American Heart Association with your Valentine’s purchase: The charity has created the “Go Red” campaign to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease in women, and a number of companies are donating a portion of proceeds from the sales of specific “Go Red” products. Included are sexy lingerie from Le Mystere, jewelry from Brighton and Swarovski and even a “Go Red” datebook/organizer from Day-Timers.

Trend Tip:
With each purchase from www.ShopGoRed.com, you’ll receive a copy of “Ten Ways to Take Charge of Your Health” and a red dress pin, the symbol for women’s empowerment over their heart health.

He'll be dotty for you!

Seeing spots
We’re seeing spots (and dots) all over, and for Valentine’s Day a polka dot nightie, robe or slippers is a charming alternative to the traditional “hearts and flowers” prints. We found much to like in J Lo’s sleepwear collection, from Pureda (feminine-yet-sexy styles in pure cotton) and at La Perla and Arianne as well. For the super-trendy, try Lejaby’s polka dot bra/panty combination a la the “itsy bitsy teeny weeny” polka dot bikini.

Trend Tip:
Don’t forget the pooch! Just about everyone we know gives their pets Valentine’s Day presents. You can find fabulous polka-dotted collars, coats, beds and more at PamperedPuppy.com.

Nothing says love like lilac.

Let it be lilac (or lavender)
Lilac and lavender are the “it” colors of the moment, and what better way to indulge than with the gift of lingerie? Best of all, these colors look wonderful with most skin tones and hair colors. You'll find lingerie and sleepwear in these hot new shades at Fredericks.com and from Rampage, Cosabella, Juicy Couture and Natori — or pick up an adorable lingerie or cosmetics case from Lulu Guinness.

Trend Tip:
The scents of lilac and lavender are sublime as well. Consider a bouquet of flowers containing these blooms, a potted lavender (Smith & Hawken is a great source), the indulgence of scented bath and body products or aromatherapy candles.

For men, soft cotton boxers are in the pink.

Man of the house
This could be the one time of year when you can get away with giving him something just a little bit … pink. We adore the striped and paisley cotton boxers from Banana Republic — and put them right on the top of our gift list (along with a pink striped dress shirt and pink tie). Or you could kick it up a level with a set of debonair pajamas in cotton (Alfred Dunhill of London) or silk (Paul Stuart).

Trend Tip:
A robe or a pair of slippers are always a good bet for Valentine’s Day. (Anything to get him decently dressed while lounging around the house, right?) Try a plush terry-cloth robe in red from Ralph Lauren or a great pair of Hush Puppies fleece-lined, indoor/outdoor clogs emblazoned with the logo of his favorite sports team.
