TUCSON - U.S. Rep. Ron Barber welcomed a $100,000 federal grant to the Bisbee-Douglas International Airport that will allow Cochise County to buy a sweeper to keep runways at the historic airport safe.

"The Bisbee-Douglas International Airport is important to the future economic growth of Cochise County," said Barber. "Purchasing this sweeper will ensure that the airport continues to provide safe and reliable service that allows this part of Cochise County to grow."

The FAA says foreign objects can be ingested into an aircraft engine, which can result in damage to the aircraft or cause an accident. Debris also can damage or become lodged in aircraft operating mechanisms or cut aircraft tires.

The airport, on a 3,000-acre site midway between Bisbee and Douglas, was built between 1941 and 1943 as a bomber training field for World War II pilots. In 1949, after the end of the war, the federal government gave the airport to Cochise County. It's used primarily by private pilots. However, the Air Force and Army use it for training during the summer and it also is used by planes fighting wildfires in the area.
