Promise Zone is celebrating its early success.

The county-wide effort is funded through New York State and is a collaboration between Broome-Tioga BOCES, Binghamton University, area school districts and mental health support in Broome County.

The goal of the effort is to increase graduation rates, address attendance concerns, and improve access to mental health services.

Promise Zone recently held an evening where it marked its summer accomplishments, including creating shopping cart gardens, murals of the community, learning about healthy lifestyles, and how to make mats for the homeless out of plastic bags, courtesy of Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial Church.

Additionally, students worked with people from Cornell Cooperative Extension to find out about robotics.

"They're learning leadership skills. They're learning employment skills, but also learning that all of those skills can be transferred into the classroom to help promote academic growth and success as well, which is extremely important," said Carla Murray, the Community Schools Coordinator for B.C. Promise Zone.

Promise Zone has had a summer program, but also operates during the school year.
