Statement from attorneys for Tom Cruise and the Church of Scientology:

In a letter to NBC News, an attorney for the Church of Scientology says it is absurd to suggest that the fence around its property is to keep people inside, and says, "This is just one of the countless smears against the Church by non-credible sources who have an agenda to damage the Church and its leadership."

The Church says Janela Webster left the Church of her own volition six years ago and was not prevented from doing so.

An attorney for Tom Cruise says, "It is absolutely false that Mr. Cruise, or anyone else to his knowledge, did or said anything to lessen Connor and Bella's communication or relationship with their mother. On the contrary, Mr. Cruise did all he could to encourage that relationship." Cruise’s attorney says Rathbun’s statements are nothing more than an attempt to drive a wedge between his children, their mother, and the religion his children practice.

Attorneys for both Cruise and the Church say Rathbun's statements invade the privacy rights of Cruise and his children and violate the law.

Overnight, NBC News received letters from the Church reiterating that Rathbun is an apostate and a heretic. The Church says the context and content of Rathbun's disclosures have been and are categorically denied by those in a position to know the truth. The Church says any communication between minister and parishioner is considered sacrosanct within the Scientology religion and under the law.
