and now a heartwarming story out of columbus, ohio, that proves coming in last can still make somebody a winner. for one runner, it was a show of sportsmanship extending far beyond a
single track
meet. it was a great day for megan, even though she came in dead last in her final race of the day. she helped a competitor who had fallen on the last lap of the race.
>>
it was really emotional, and people came up to news tears just really moved by what megan had done.
>>
her day began when she won the
ohio state
title for the
1600
meter race. the first girl from
west liberty
salem high school
to win a state track title in more than 20 years.
>>
just to be able to achieve something that you've worked all your life for. that's a really good feeling and you can't probably put it into words.
>> reporter:
but what most people will remember won't be that win but meghan's final race of the day. after winning the
1600
meters, she ran in the 3200 meter race just under two miles, when she noticed fellow runner
arden
had fallen on the last lap.
>>
i was coming around the turn, and it was probably about
100 meters
left, and she was probably about 50 meters in front of me, maybe a little bit more, a little bit less, and i saw her fall.
>> reporter:
vogel
then guided mcmath, carrying her across the
finish line
ahead of
vogel
herself.
>>
i just kind of didn't think twice about it. i knew i was just going to go help and help her out. you deserve to finish no matter who you are. i was going to make that happen for her no matter what. i knew she would do the same for me. i was going to do that for
arden
.
>>
what a sweet girl. meghan
vogel
will be a senior next year.
arden
mcmath will be a junior so they may end up competing against each other again.
