Caleb and Candra Pence had just said "I do" when a tornado touched down miles away from their outdoor wedding ceremony.A lot of planning goes into a wedding — finding the perfect dress, shoes and location are key, and for the Pence couple, their Kansas farmhouse location made for a one-of-a-kind backdrop that wins them the wedding photo of the year.
"I couldn't ask for better pictures," said Candra Pence."It's just Kansas, it's just who we are, it's like wheat fields, cowboys and tornadoes; what more can you ask for?" said the groom's mother, Carla Pence.It was a day of firsts.When Candra and Caleb walked down the aisle for the first time together as husband and wife, the bride, a Nebraska native, also saw her very first tornado, and the photographer snapped her first wedding twister.
"This is probably a first and a last, I don't plan on getting anything like this ever again," said photographer Cate Eighmey.
"As we were walking out after the wedding, I seen them and I just looked at him and asked if we should be concerned about them at all," said Candra."We had a plan B, women and children first to the basement," said Carla as she chuckled.The tornadoes were about eight miles away, heading northeast, ripping through Harper County, bringing destruction to their neighbors."Aside from the obvious devastation there, it is also good to know there was joy that came out of the day," Eighmey said.
The couple was on the road all day Monday, heading to Wyoming for a western honeymoon to match their western wedding.Caleb is a bull rider and Cander is a barrel racer. The two met at a rodeo.
