  1. Closed captioning of: Hop into these essential shoes for spring

    >> but first, this is "today" on nbc.

    >> this morning on "today's style," the hottest shoe trends. we already know that neon is in when it comes to your wardrobe, so of course you need the right shoes to complete the look. and kathy post is the lifestyle editor for gilt.com. she joins us this morning looking quite fine.

    >> very nice. very nice.

    >> it is a crazy time for shoes.

    >> yes, yes. we are seeing so many amazing styles. everything we've seen on the runway and in the stars we're going to see in shoes.

    >> flats are in. flats are back.

    >> better than ever. women's feet out there are rejoicing. but the great news is you don't have to be -- to be comfy you don't have to be frumpy. we've got some amazing styles. plus we've got patterns. major pattern in flats. starting with this little cute one. we've seen lots of leopard. here's a leopard applique. this is from urban outfitters just $34. and the great geometrics. this is tommy hilfiger just $59 from piperlime. and news flash, big trend alert, it's all about the loafer this season for a flat.

    >> really?

    >> these are by g.h. bass and co.

    >> i love these little things you can put on your shoes.

    >> you just snap them on, snap them off.

    >> oh, my gosh, they're cute.

    >> it's 11 shoes in one.

    >> i'd wear them on my ears.

    >> the problem with flats for me, i have a big foot like a size 9 1/2 or 10 and flats seem to make your feet look huge.

    >> well, this wonderful trend may be great for you. here you can see there's this pointy shoe. so we're seeing a flat that is not so elongating and super comfortable. these are from made well.

    >> wouldn't you think the shorter front would be less elongating?

    >> it is funny. it's all about the eye. it draws your eye to the leg when you have a pointy flat.

    >> okay. let's move on because i've got to talk about these.

    >> the sandals. sort of think about the '70s. we're seeing a wonderful block heel. a stacked heel coming back. so much easier to walk on. and sort of a return to the single sole meaning no platform. so a four-inch heel is going to feel like a four-inch heel. these two great examples are from dara, under $100. if you can't give up your platforms these are also fantastic.

    >> those are great.

    >> we love the t-strap. these are from target, $24. but we're seeing a more futuristic t-strap. from boutique nine and zara. easy to wear.

    >> you know what never goes out, espadrilles.

    >> i know. and don't we love them. these down here, every color of the rainbow, love them. they are actually made by a family business what's been making them since the 1800s in a small town in spain. espadrillestore.com. and they're only $25.

    >> look how cute.

    >> those are adorable. and they're inexpensive.

    >> and then if you want something a little sexier we've got an espadrille wedge from target. love the patent leather, $29. a grosgrain wrap up the leg from gap. and fantastic nude so that's very flattering. and then you've also got bold patterns in espadrilles. and these are from gee yeah.

    >> and the final trend, the best shoe to walk in on the planet, wedges.

    >> don't you love a wedge? we've got, you know, two trends. color blocking first. these from steve madden are a tone-on-tone. and they give you an extra several inches.

    >> mm-hmm.

    >> who doesn't like that. and then these --

    >> okay. this is a family show.

    >> oh, goodness. and these are from jessica simpson love these. and these wild shoes are by jeffrey campbell . little fashionistas running all over town in these.

    >> is that an easy heel to walk in?

    >> believe it or not it is. this looks like wood but it's actually rubber so it's quite comfortable. and jeffrey campbell .

    >> i love the cork.

    >> work is fantastic. it's actually naturally water proof so great for the rain. and it's neutral, looks great with everything. these are nautical stripes to a full-on cork shoe.

    >> you know a lot about corks, don't you?

    >> the wine jokes have stopped, okay?

    >> thank you for having me.

    >> all right. still just ahead the frenzy surrounding tonight's $550 million mega millions drawing.

    >> all of that is after your local news. grab that ticket.

Comfy doesn't have to mean frumpy! From the classic ballet flat to the patterned loafer, we are seeing a real focus on the flat for spring. After seasons of sky high heels, flats are feeling really fresh and are the perfect complement spring's silhouettes. Chassie Post of Gilt.com highlights the best buys of the season:

Patterned flats
We have seen major pattern for spring, from an updated take on the classic leopard print to a sharp and graphic geometric lattice print from Tommy Hilfiger. Trend alert: The loafer is the must-have flats — think more structured than the ballet flat and and preppy cool.

  • Urban Outfitters Cooperative Applique Flat, $34
  • Tommy Hilfiger Jacquard Flat, $59
  • GH Bass Brooklynn Aruba Floral Canvas, $69

Colored flats
Color is king this spring and we are seeing flats in every shade under the sun from bold and bright to fresh pastels. Starting with a gorgeous coral peep toe flat by Lindsay Phillips called the Snap Shoe ($59). These are super-cool as you can switch out decorative embellishments called "snaps" to suit your mood. Just snap on, snap off — it's like 5 shoes in one! We also have a rainbow of the hottest Spring colors: two-toned hot pink and orange cap-toe flats from Aldo ($70), rich green suede 50s inspired pointy toe flats (another big trend) from Madewell ($88) and sweet woven pastel flats from Geox ($125) which are actually super-high-tech — it is the flat that breathes with your foot!

  • Lindsay Phillips Peep Toe Flat, $59
  • Aldo Tullis Flat, $70
  • Madewell Suede Sidewalk Skimmer, $88
  • Geox Lola Flat, $125

Stacked Heel Sandals
At Gilt we are loving the sturdy, stacked heel sandal and are having no problem giving our stilettos a little rest this Spring. Taking it's cue from the 70s, some of the hallmarks of the stacked heel trend are a return to the single sole (meaning no platform) with our first two examples from Zara (both under $100).

The upside is that it is a very modern silhouette, the down-side is that due to no platform your 4-inch heel will actually feel like a four inch heel. And if you aren't quite ready to give up your platforms, you can still try the new stacked heel with these strappy statement makers from Vince Camuto ($129), a neutral off-set with vibrant colored straps.

  • Zara High Heel Sandal With Buckles, $89.90
  • Zara Strappy Sandal With Buckles, $99.90
  • Vince Camuto Petal Sandal, $129

T-strap sandals
These shoes are sexy! We all love a classic T-strap sandal like these metallic snakeskin thong sandals from Target ($24) — they are a never-go-wrong staple that will never go out of style. But this season there is a new T-Strap in town —the inverted T-strap. Instead of the classic between-the-toe strap, we are seeing sandals that turns the T upside down with a strap across the top of the foot, with the strap meeting in the center. The T-straps are edgier/futuristic styles, a modern take on the gladiator which feature bold colors and edgier shapes and materials like patent leather and satin.

  • Target Peace Gladiator T-Strap Sandal, $24.95
  • Zara Sandal With Combined Straps, $35.90
  • Boutique 9 Flat Sandal, $79.00

Espadrilles
Espadrilles are classic and fresh, yet have been around since the 1300s! The defining characteristic of the espadrille is the woven rope (traditionally jute) sole—- so, if it's got the rope detail then technically it's an espadrille. From the classic flat styles to the newer wedges, espadrilles are a never-go-wrong choice for spring and summer.

Traditional espadrilles
Only one brand here and it's our all time favorite which comes in every color you can imagine. These traditional espadrilles are made by hand in a small village in northern Spain by a family business that has been making espadrilles since the 1800s!

  • Traditional Espadrilles From EspadrilleStore.com, $25.95

Wedge Espadrilles
If you want to up the ante on the traditional espadrille, wedge and platform styles abound. From navy patent platform espadrilles from Target ($29) the gros grain ribbon wedge that ties around the ankle from Gap ($59) to a chunkier nude buckled platform by Pour La Victoire ($123) to a radical tropical printed take from Geox ($140) it's easy to step out in style with this season's chic options.

  • Target Teresa Espadrille Wedge, $29.99
  • Gap Wedge Espadrille, $59.95
  • Pour La Victoire Wedge, $118
  • Geox Platform Wedge Sandal, $140

Work-it wedges
The sky's the limit with this spring's towering platform wedges! We think the key to wearing a wedge is to choose a style with a sturdy ankle strap… it not only looks super-chic but keeps them on your feet. Some of the big trends we're seeing in wedges are bold color-blocking, cork and vibrant pattern.

Color-block wedge
Color-blocking is also major in shoes and accessories, whether it be a more literal two-toned orange and red suede wedge platform these from Steve Madden ($99) to bold cross-cutting stripes (Jessica Simpson $98) to the abstract wedge heel and contrasting neon and nude blocks of color from Jeffrey Campbell ($159). These radical heels look like wood but are actually made out of a shock-absorbing rubber so are super-light and — believe it or not — quite comfortable.

  • Steve Madden Color-Blocked Platform Wedge, $99.99
  • Jessica Simpson Cocoa Wedge, $98
  • Jeffrey Campbell Rock Me Wedge, $159

Cork wedge
Cork is not just for wine bottles! Naturally gorgeous (and an eco-friendly material), cork is also naturally waterproof so a great option for those rainy days (also fantastic shock absorber so provides some much appreciated comfort ). We are seeing cork everywhere and because it acts as a neutral it pairs well with absolutely any material — from crisp nautical stripes (Farenheit, $59) to Bold Green Crepe (BCBGeneration, $79). Cork is even glamorous enough to pull off a shoe on it's own: this full-on strappy cork shoe by DV by Dolce Vita ($79) is an ode to the natural beauty of cork — just a little neon pink piping to give it some kick!

  • Fahrenheit Mila Wedge Sandal, $59.99
  • DV By Dolce Vita Taiga Strappy Cutout, $79
  • BCBGeneration Rink Wedge, $79

  1. Trend to try now: Tangerine lipstick

Citrus-toned lipstick is having quite a moment — and with good reason! Tangerine is the 2012 Pantone Color of the Year. But there are certain things to keep in mind if you're want to try out Jennifer Hudson's look. "Orange can be the hardest to wear of all the bright colors," said makeup artist Melanie Inglessis, who works with Lea Michele and Olivia Wilde. Keep reading to find out how tangerine can work for you.

  2. Keep the rest of your face natural

"Unless you're channeling the '80s, stay away from bright eye shadows when wearing an orange lip," said Inglessis, who advises using earthy neutrals like Brooklyn Decker. "Keep makeup looking natural, and switch your blush for a light dusting of all-over bronzer." (Hannes Magerstaedt / Getty Images.via InStyle.com) Back to slideshow navigation
  3. Find your perfect tangerine: dark hair and skin

If you have coloring similar to Solange Knowles, Inglessis advises looking for a bold tangerine with blue undertones. "The vivid color really pops against darker skin tones." We like MAC Tendertone lip balm in Purring ($15; maccosmetics.com), a cool-toned orange that won't dry your lips.

  4. Find your perfect tangerine: Fair hair and skin

People with fair skin and light hair like Kristen Bell should opt for peach-toned oranges. "Softer hues are more complimentary for those with fair skin and blond hair," Inglessis said. "Look for a light coral or peach shade you can layer." Chanel's Rouge Coco Shine in Flirt ($32; chanel.com) looks bright in the tube, but it imparts a sheer wash of true coral on the lips. 5. Find your perfect tangerine: Dark hair and fair skin

"True orange lipstick is stunning on brunettes and people with dark hair," Inglessis said. If you have chestnut strands like Emmy Rossum, keep in mind that your hue should have yellow or red undertones. We love Shiseido's Perfect Rouge in Day Lily ($25; shiseido.com).

  6. Find your perfect tangerine: Red hair and fair skin

Redheads like Coco Rocha can wear orange too! To avoid looking washed out, blend a bit of lipstick onto the apples of your cheeks. "Auburns should also skip matte, powdery finishes as they create a more doll-like appearance," Inglessis said. 7. What to wear

Take a tip from Ciara, who paired her tangerine lip with a cutout LBD. "Darker-colored dresses look better with punchy oranges," Inglessis said. "Bright colors like bright blue or green can look clownish and would overpower the citrus hue."

  8. Great lipstick find

Inglessis is a fan of the atomic Illamasqua Lipstick in Flare ($22; sephora.com). "With a color this bright, I wouldn't match the lip liner," she advised. "Instead, trace lips with a nude pencil to avoid clashing." (Inglessis / Instyle.com) Back to slideshow navigation
  9. Great lip gloss

For neon novices, Le Metier de Beaute's lip gloss in Orange Juiced ($32; neimanmarcus.com) is a high-shine glaze that doesn't intimidate.
