It’s official: Today, called Accession Day, marks the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and kicks off a series of celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee year.

The queen came to the throne on Feb. 6, 1952. She celebrated her 25-year Silver Jubilee in 1977 and her 50-year Golden Jubilee in 2002. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897.
Slideshow: Life of a queen (on this page)The biggest Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year will take place in London over an extended weekend from June 2 to 5. The festivities will include a flotilla on the River Thames and a concert at Buckingham Palace. Major events also are planned in Commonwealth nations around the world.

"I am writing to thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you have given to me and Prince Philip over these years," she wrote. "In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope that we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighborliness, examples of which I have been fortunate to see throughout my reign."
