Video: No leads in Baby Lisa case

  1. Transcript of: No leads in Baby Lisa case

JENNA WOLFE, co-host: In Kansas City , authorities continue to look for answers in the desperate search for Lisa Irwin , the baby girl who just turned one and who disappeared from her family's home back in October. NBC 's John Yang is in Kansas City with more. John , good morning.

JOHN YANG reporting: Good morning, Jenna . It's been almost six weeks since Lisa Irwin disappeared from her -- the crib in her house here; and in all that time, the police say they have no solid leads, no solid suspects and no solid idea what happened to her. On Lisa Irwin 's first birthday, balloons sent skyward outside the house where she vanished from her crib in early October. Her parents, Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin , who are staying at another house, marked the day privately. Lisa's birthday came as tensions between Deborah and Jeremy 's attorneys and investigators intensified. Their local lawyer, John Picerno , called police complaints about a lack of cooperation fantasy.

Mr. JOHN PICERNO (Attorney for the Irwin Family): They've been interviewed-slash-interrogated in excess of 30 hours on five different occasions.

YANG: But police point out that the last interview was more than a month ago. They say they'd like to question the couple again separately. Their attorneys have not allowed it.

Mr. PICERNO: What we're not going to do is let our clients be subjected to interrogation techniques.

YANG: This past week, Lisa 's half-brothers, aged five and eight, were questioned by an FBI specialist. An attorney for the family said the videotaped interviews lasted about two hours and generated no new developments. Police and FBI tell NBC News they're still looking into all possible explanations for what happened to Lisa . Bill Stanton , a private security consultant who says he's been hired by an anonymous benefactor to investigate, says the available evidence points away from the parents.

Mr. BILL STANTON: It's easy to say, 'Oh, it was the mother or the father did it.' Really? Well then tell me how. No one seems to be able to articulate that.

YANG: In response, a Kansas City police spokesman tells NBC News , "He doesn't know what we know. They may well have nothing to do with it, but we would still like to talk to them away from each other."

YANG: As the search for Lisa begins its sixth week, investigators say there's still no trace of her. Stanton looks on the bright side of that fact.

Mr. STANTON: Until this baby is found, I am taking it as this child is alive.

YANG: Although police are continuing to press for an interview with Deborah and Jeremy , they are careful to stress that neither of them is a suspect in their daughter's disappearance. Jenna :

A call from a cell phone reportedly stolen the night Kansas City infant Lisa Irwin vanished from her home points to the innocence of the parents in her disappearance, their lawyer said Saturday night.

Investigators are still searching for Irwin, last seen when her mother, Deborah Bradley, said she put her to bed the evening of October 3. Lisa's father, Jeremy Irwin, said the girl was gone when he came home at 4 a.m. the next day.

The couple said their three cell phones were also missing. One phone was used at 11:57 p.m. October 3 to call the number of a woman the couple does not know, lawyer John Picerno said Saturday on the "Justice with Judge Jeanine" show on Fox News. The FBI told him of the call, Picerno said.

While police questioned Bradley and Irwin intensely about Lisa's disappearance, the couple insists their daughter and the cell phones were stolen. The cell phone call that night is important evidence, Picerno said.

"What it tells you is our clients are telling the truth," Picerno said. The caller never did reach the woman but a record of the call was logged, he said. The woman, identified by Picerno as Megan Wright, has told reporters she did not know Bradley nor Irwin and cannot explain the call.

Friday, on another Fox News show, "America Live with Megyn Kelly", Picerno said the FBI told him someone tried to access the voice mail and internet of the couple's phone at 3:17 and 3:32 a.m. October 4. That effort happened between one-fifth and one-third of a mile from the Irwin home, he said.

Police have not commented on details of the case.
