Video: Kardashian on divorce: ‘I have to follow my heart’

  1. Transcript of: Kardashian on divorce: ‘I have to follow my heart’

ANN CURRY, co-host: Back now at 8:10. Reality TV star Kim Kardashian raced off to Australia shortly after announcing her split with her new husband, but the media glare is just as bright in the land Down Under . NBC 's Mara Schiavocampo has more now. Hey, Mara , good morning.

MARA SCHIAVOCAMPO reporting: Good morning, Ann. Kardashian 's trip to Australia makes one thing clear: Interest in the story extends far beyond the US. The reality star was mobbed when she got to Australia and has been facing questions about her failed marriage every step of the way.

Ms. KIM KARDASHIAN: And, you know, you can't -- I can't really live my life for what people are going to say and not say.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: Speaking up Down Under . On an Australian morning show on Thursday, Kim Kardashian , little sister Khloe by her side, made her first TV appearance since filing for divorce from basketball player Kris Humphries .

Ms. KIM KARDASHIAN: It's hurtful, but first and foremost I have to follow my heart.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: As the sisters repeatedly reminded viewers about their line of handbags...

Ms. KHLOE KARDASHIAN: You know, that's why we're here, is for the launch of our Kardashian Kollection handbags.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: ...they were repeatedly asked about Kim 's romantic baggage...

Unidentified Man #1: How hard did you work to keep it together?

SCHIAVOCAMPO: ...forcing Kardashian to defend herself against accusations that her short-lived marriage was a made-for- TV showmance.

Ms. KIM KARDASHIAN: You just have to listen to your intuition and follow your heart. There's no right or wrong thing to do.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: Monday in LA , she filed for divorce from her husband of just 72 days, citing irreconcilable differences. The sudden split followed a very public whirlwind romance, much of it taped for her reality shows on our sister network E!

Ms. LOLA OGUNNAIKE (Today Contributor): People have had a really negative reaction to this split because they feel like they've been duped.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: Numerous reports said the couple pocketed $18 million for the wedding as part of TV and magazine deals, prompting many to wonder if the quickie marriage was all a money-making sham, something Kim was quick to refute.

Ms. KIM KARDASHIAN: There has been from the start so many rumors of money and dollar signs of all these things thrown up in the air, and so much of it not being true.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: Speaking on the TODAY show Wednesday, Kardashian 's mother, Kris Jenner , also denied a wedding for profit.

Ms. KRIS JENNER: They made some money for the pictures that were sold and things like that, but at the end of the day that money went towards the wedding. Mm-hmm.

CURRY: About how much money did she make for the photographs?

Ms. JENNER: I don't know what the end result was, but it was -- it was less than $1 million.

    CURRY: OK.

Ms. JENNER: And probably more than a half a million dollars.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: Still, some just aren't buying it.

Mr. HARVEY LEVIN: Does anybody in here believe that Kim Kardashian did not profit off the wedding?

Unidentified Man #2: To sit there and say that they're not profiting is insulting to everybody that's watching.

Offscreen Voice #1: Step back, please.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: And now from Kardashian , a rare plea for privacy.

Ms. KIM KARDASHIAN: When you want to kind of like...

Offscreen Voice #2: When you have...

Ms. KIM KARDASHIAN: ...have some time for yourself and have some private time, it's like you're not really allowed to.

SCHIAVOCAMPO: In a post on her blog, Kardashian said she will be donating the money from her wedding gifts to the Dream Foundation . The Dream Foundation confirmed they received a substantial contribution they said will help

hundreds of families. Ann: All right, Mara Schiavocampo this morning. Thank you so much .

It was 7 Australia’s “Sunrise” program that asked the question on many people’s minds about the split between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries after just 72 days of marriage: How hard did the pair work to keep their marriage together?

Kardashian's mom says 'wedding wasn't a sham'

“I think when you know so deep in your heart that you just have to listen to your intuition and follow your heart, there’s no right or wrong thing to do, so I really believe that,” Kardashian said in response to the question on Thursday’s “Sunrise” morning show in Australia.

“I don’t think I’m ready to get into the details of it,” Kardashian continued, dodging the question of whether she and Humphries tried counseling. “I think what really upsets me most is there has been, from the start, so many rumors of money and dollar signs of all these things thrown up in the air ... and so much of it not being true. It’s kind of what you get for living your life so publicly on a reality show. I get that ... but I think that also just teaches me I kind of want to step back a little bit.”

When asked if she plans to take some time alone, Kardashian said she would — in the future.

“Of course I do want that time to be with myself and close friends and family,” she said. “I don’t think you ever prepare yourself for when that time is. So, I will get that time somewhere in the near future.”

Kardashian says, 'I'd never marry for money'

Kardashian, who was accompanied by younger sister Khloe at the appearance to promote a Kardashians Australian-exclusive line of handbags, said she made the trip Down Under despite her circumstances to honor her commitment.

“I do want some time really to myself and it’s a really tough thing to go through, but I didn’t want to bail on everyone and kind of skip out on this commitment here,” she said.

“I’m really proud of Kim for not just bailing and canceling because this is a really hard time for her,” Khloe said. “She’s being really strong and Lamar [Odom] and I are here to be her support at this time.”
